Mary Jane was born June 1873 in Alabama. Mary Married Erin McCain in Oklahoma they raised one child. Vernon
Ervin McCain was born June 4, 1908 in Enville, Oklahoma.
Vernon, better known as "Skip" was the first Black College All American From Langston University graduating with
honors in 1931. He recieved his master of science from Tennesse State University After several years of high school
coaching in Oklahoma and an appointment at Tennesse State University, he moved to the University of Maryland Eastern
shore (formerly Maryland State College) in Princess Anne, Maryland in 1948.
In 1951 Skip was named coach of the year, by the Pigskin Club of Washington D.C. His Maryland State team
1949-1951, and 1955 went undefeated. At one point held a 31 game winning streak.
In fifteen years he won four conference championships and saw a record balloon to 105-21-5. Skip was married
to Mac Etta Johnson, his high school sweet heart in 1931, to this union one child was born, Vernetta McCain.
Skip was formerly a member of the Metropolitan United Methodist Church, in Princess Anne, Maryland and St. Paul United
Methodist Church in Berlin, Maryland. He was a active member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and the Langston University
Alumni Association.
